Well no worries, I have compared the price, facilities, amenities, and location- so come find out the best hostels in Antigua!

Are you planning to visit Antigua in Guatemala, one of the most charming and colorful cities in Central America? If so, you are in for a treat.

But before you pack your bags and book your flight, there is one thing you need to consider as a backpacker: where to stay and what are the best hostels in Antigua. Plus accommodation is a bit more pricey here than the rest of the country, so is it worth splashing that cash?

Antigua is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts a rich history, culture, and architecture. It is also surrounded by stunning volcanoes and lush nature that offer many opportunities for adventure and exploration.

Seriously this is the perfect mix of a modern city and quaint town, though the beautiful colonial buildings constantly left me in awe.

I actually stayed in Antigua for 3 weeks while I was in Guatemala. From studying at one of the local Spanish schools, climbing volcanos, and using it as a base to travel around the rest of the country. There is a reason I kept coming back, and I am excited that you are planning a visit there as well!

You will find all sorts of hostels in Antigua for all types of travelers. Whether you are simply looking for the best spot, somewhere social, or simply a cheap bed, I will explain all these options and more in this guide to the best hostels in Antigua Guatemala.

The 10 Best Hostels In Antigua, Guatemala

How To Choose The Best Hostels In Antigua Guatemala

There is a crazy amount of hostels here in Antigua, though they do vary in a few things such as price, location, and the amenities provided. So keep this in mind whether you are looking for somewhere social, cheap, or in a great location.

In all honesty, I travel in more of a glam-packer style and I will be more than happy to stay in a hostel that fits my needs. This usually includes a pod-style bed with curtains.

Traveling Central America there is an excellent hostel scene where owners have built the hostels as mini resorts that you never need to leave, especially as they can organize all activities for you at affordable prices.

Well, I would say the hostels in Antigua aren’t so much like this, though it’s simply because they are all well situated nearby to great restaurants and cafes, local activities, and in a relatively safe environment.

I mean you can’t go wrong with sturdy wooden bunk beds, and if you are happy to save money by booking this sort of accommodation you will be happy to know this is also an option here.

You can easily find cheaper options available that have a great social atmosphere, comfortable beds, and clean bathrooms. So you don’t need to worry too much, nor do you have to look far.

So when choosing the best hostels in Antigua Guatemala,  some things I took into account are:

Price

Now depending on what the hostels offer here in Antigua you can find some surprisingly affordable options. Though the super nice places, often mentioned higher up in my best hostels in Antigua list generally do seem to bit a bit more pricey.

These certainly won’t be the cheapest places in Guatemala, though if you are willing to stay somewhere a bit more basic you will find some super affordable prices.

Now because I am a little older and will pay extra for comfort and good facilities I found myself budgeting, and in general, averaging $20.00 per night throughout my travels in Central America.

Though in Antigua I found that the hostels which meet my preference were actually quite pricey. In the end, I paid $18.00 per night for a nice dorm, but in a larger room with about 16 beds. Considering its size it was an awesome sleep and everyone was respectful.

Location

Antigua is a small city that can be easily explored on foot or by tuk-tuk. However, some areas are more convenient and attractive than others.

The most popular area to stay in Antigua is the historical center, where you can find most of the attractions, restaurants, bars, shops, and markets. However, this area can also be noisy and crowded at times.

If you prefer a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere, you can stay on the outskirts of the city or in nearby villages. Depending on what you want to see and do in Antigua, you can choose the hostel that has the best location for you.

In terms of this guide, I will be referencing back to Parque Central which is basically in the heart of the historic center of Antigua.

Amenities

In terms of amenities, I found the hostels in Antigua to be freakin fantastic, up there with some of the best hostel amenities I came across in Central America. You don’t need to worry so much about power cuts here and toilet issues as you would elsewhere around the country.

The internet connection is also good in a lot of places, making it a popular digital nomad spot as well. Though I also purchased a Claro SIM card for $23.00 which includes 10G of data over 30 days as well as unlimited use of social media.

Thankfully Antigua is one of the only places in the country of Guatemala where you can easily find modern pod-style dorm beds. I am definitely the demographic for this type of room and happily spend a little extra for the luxury.

I think this is also part of the reason I decided to base myself here for quite a few weeks during my adventures.

All hostels will allow you to book transport and activities through them and this is a great way to meet other travelers. They also may put on their own daily activities, such as market tours.

Though this wasn’t as common here, as you may find in neighboring countries, simply because I think Antigua is a safe and easily accessible city where you can confidently explore by yourself.

One thing to be aware of is the majority of dorm rooms have no cooling in Antigua, which will at least make your stay more affordable. Even though it is located up in the mountains, during the day it can get quite warm depending on the time of year your visit.

Therefore even booking a dorm room with a simple fan can make quite a difference.

Many hostels in Antigua will include a free breakfast, which we backpackers always love. You can even find some with swimming pools, onsite restaurants, kitchens for guests to use, and laundry services.

So now we know what we are looking for let’s get into the best hostels in Antigua.

Overall Best Hostel In Antigua – Maya Papaya

There are some excellent hostels in Antigua, though Maya Papaya is right up there as the best hostel. Located off one of the main streets behind a security gate you will find yourself transported into their lush garden.

It has everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay: spacious and clean rooms with comfy beds and personal lockers.

They offer plenty of awesome tours such as Acatenango and Pacaya Volcano. You are also able to book your tourist shuttles through them to other parts of the country, or even Honduras or El Salvador.

They have a fully equipped kitchen which is something I love as a way to keep food costs down. It is actually one of the cleanest hostel kitchens I have ever seen!

In terms of common areas, there is outside seating and a bar where the majority of people enjoy hanging out. This is where they serve their free breakfast, as well as free afternoon tea with unlimited coffee and biscuits.

Inside you can find a room dedicated to digital nomads with comfortable workspaces, as well as a lounge room with Netflix.

Of course, there is always a place to hang out in the tropical garden under the banana trees and next to the sprawling monsteras, have a game of table tennis, or just chill in the hammocks. There are plenty of little hidden spots where you can have some quiet time if needed.

The dorm rooms are large and spacious with big lockers to store your main bag. There are pod-style beds with curtains all around, including the top bunk so you can have all the privacy you could ever want.

The duvets are super plush, as well as super plush pillows. There are also housekeepers who will tidy up the room, and make your bed daily, yes even in the dorm room. I also left numerous things there between my visits and it was always reported to reception and kept safe for my return.

If you are in the female dorm you will have your own bathroom, though in the other dorms, everyone shares one large bathroom. Though there are plenty of toilets/showers available, and there is never a queue to wait, and again, they are always in a super clean condition, especially for a hostel.

One last thing I need to say is the staff at Maya Papaya are friendly and helpful. With organizing events, helping us practice our Spanish, and simply giving awesome recommendations for Antigua.

Best Hostel In Antigua For Solo Travelers – Tropicana Hostel

Welcome to the best hostel in Antigua for solo travelers, Tropicana. This is a well-known spot on the backpacking trail in Guatemala and travelers seem to either love it or hate it. Though it is known as a popular party spot so best to only stay here if you are keen on a few drinks and some late nights.

Finally, there is also a jacuzzi where you can relax after doing one of the volcano treks, a must-do when you are in Antigua.

Speaking of volcano treks, Tropicana actually runs its own Acatenango Volcano tour, which is one of the more affordable options.
