Singapore is definitely an expensive city, so I’m always here for a good free activity. Luckily, the Spectra Light Show at Marina Bay Sands is one of the best things to do in Singapore at night, with waterfront views, music, lights, and absolutely free.
Now, if you’re wondering what to do in Singapore at not you’ll honestly be spoiled for options. It’s one of my favorite cities, and the bonus is I feel entirely safe walking around as a solo female traveler. Though once dark falls, there’s definitely some ‘can’t miss’ spots, including the famous Spectra Light Show.
It’s a combination of fountains, lasers, music, and some pretty impressive skyline views for the short but cool performance. Bonus is that it’s free as well so if you’re on a budget like I’ve been a lot during my visits, it’s a great place to check out in the evenings.
Though, truth be told I have visited the Spectra Light Show quite a few times while I’ve done different trips to Singapore (I’ve been like 7 times!). Since I travel a lot with different family and friends, this is one of the spots I make sure to take them to.
Some visits have been a hit and others a complete miss where I literally walk away soaking wet. That’s why I decided to write this guide on the Spectra Light Show in Singapore so you don’t make the same mistakes as me.
So let’s get into show times, where to watch, how to get there, and whether it’s actually worth adding to your Singapore itinerary.
Spectra Light Show Singapore: Everything You Need To Know

What Is The Spectra Light Show?
The Spectra Light Show is basically Marina Bay Sands showing off a little, and honestly, fair enough this place is pretty epic. It’s a nighttime performance that mixes dancing fountains, colourful lights, lasers, music, and projections, all coming together in one big dramatic display over the water.
It’s not just a few lights flashing around either, there’s a proper performance element to it with changing scenes, music building in the background, and plenty going on at once.
Though if I’m to be completely honest, I’ve never had a damn idea what the heck is going on. I just like to chill back and make up my little storyline. Yup, there’s a flower, and I think a bird?
In saying this, it’s certainly worth doing while in Singapore. There are no language barriers, and it’s super accessible, just use your imagination a little.

Where Is The Spectra Light Show?
The Spectra Light Show is located at the Event Plaza at Marina Bay Sands, right outside The Shoppes mall. This is the waterfront area facing the famous Marina Bay, and it’s where you’ll get the closest, front-on view of the fountains, lights, and projections.
If you’re trying to find it, just make your way towards The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands and follow the signs for the Event Plaza or waterfront promenade.
Once you see everyone gathering along the water in the evening, you’ll know you’re in the right spot. There’s also a pretty crazy looking glass prism, which to me kind of looks like a sarcophagus. Basically you can’t really miss it.
Spectra Light Show Times
Okay, so the Spectra Light Show runs every single night, so there shouldn’t be any reason why you can’t visit during your time in Singapore!
The current show times are:
Sunday to Thursday: 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm
Friday and Saturday: 8:00 pm, 9:00 pm, and 10:00 pm
You’ll find it pretty busy all week long, though if you’re determined to avoid the crowds as much as possible try go to the latest showing on a weekday.

How Much Does The Light Show Cost?
Now, if you’re traveling Singapore on a budget like moi, the best thing about the Spectra Light Show is that it’s absolutely free to watch! Considering this is such an expensive city, we’ll take every small win we can.
You don’t need to book tickets, reserve a spot, or pay an entry fee. Just turn up at the waterfront outside Marina Bay Sands before the show starts and find somewhere to stand.
How Long Is The Spectra Light Show?
The Spectra Light Show lasts for around 15 minutes, though you will want to arrive a bit earlier to get a good spot to watch it from.
Since it doesn’t go for too long it’s nice and easy to squeeze into your existing evening plans. I recommend pairing it with other things to do around Marina Bay. You could visit Gardens by the Bay, wander through The Shoppes, grab dinner nearby, or head over to Merlion Park before or after the show.
On my most recent trip to Singapore, I visited the Lau Pa Sat Hawker Center first for dinner, then walked along the waterfront for the 8:00 pm light show. You’ll find plenty of people wandering around, both tourists and locals, so it does feel super safe to walk around.

Best Places To Watch The Spectra Light Show
Okay, so there are a few different options for spots to watch the light show. Honestly, I think this is one of those situations where the simpler the better.
Remember, it’s unlikely this show will be the main part of your night (there’s so much going on), so don’t overcomplicate it too much.

Event Plaza At Marina Bay Sands
The Event Plaza at Marina Bay Sands is hands down the best place to watch the Spectra Light Show, especially if it’s your first time. This is exactly where I recommend you head since you’ll be right in front of the action, with the fountains, lights, mist, and projections.
Yes, it can get busy, and yes, you may have to awkwardly shuffle around for a good spot, but it’s worth it. Try to arrive 15 to 20 minutes early, especially on weekends. Just grab a seat on the ground with everyone else and then stand up when the show starts.
There are two different viewing platforms depending on how close you want to be. I usually go for the lower one, there are stairs down, but they are a bit hidden on each side.
Across The Bay Near Merlion Park
For a different view, head across the bay near Merlion Park. Instead of being right up close to the chaos, you’ll get Marina Bay Sands lit up in the background, which is pretty perfect for photos.
Just a heads-up, it may look cool, but take it from me, it can be pretty anticlimactic. You won’t get to experience the intensity of it all with the massive fountains, loud music, and detailed visuals.

From A River Cruise
If you’re lucky enough not to be on as tight of a budget as I usually am, or are wanting an experience to remember, you can book yourself a river cruise.
Instead of standing in the crowd, you’ll be out on the water with the skyline around you, which makes the whole thing feel a bit more special.
Wanderlust Ventures on GetYourGuide offers a Starry Night Cruise seeing the Spectra show from the river cruise, then continuing to visit Garden Rhapsody and Merlion Park on land. It’s a good option if you’re looking for a full evening activity and want to see a lot of the highlights in the city.
How To Get To The Spectra Light Show
Now, actually getting to the Spectra Light Show is super easy since it takes place right outside Marina Bay Sands, aka one of the most well-known spots in Singapore.
You’ll no doubt find yourself here multiple times during your time in the city, so familiarise yourself with this area.

Getting There By MRT
The easiest way to get to the Spectra Light Show is by MRT. You’ll want to head to Bayfront MRT Station, which is on the Downtown Line and Circle Line, and connects directly to Marina Bay Sands.
Once you arrive, follow the signs for The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands or the waterfront promenade. You’ll eventually pop out near the Event Plaza, where the show takes place.
It can be a little overwhelming once you’re in The Shoppes Mall, but you simply need to follow the signs. They look similar to

Getting There From Gardens By The Bay
You may find yourself trying to get there from Gardens By The Bay, especially if you’re coming from the Gardens Rhapsody show for the second Spectra showing.
Again, this is pretty straightforward as they are pretty close, that means no public transport is needed. From the Supertree Grove, make your way towards Marina Bay Sands by following the signs for The Shoppes or Bayfront MRT.
The walk usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes, depending on where exactly in Gardens by the Bay you’re coming from. You’ll cross through Marina Bay Sands, I recommend heading up the escalator and walking on the Marina Bay Overpass Viewpoint. It gives you an epic view over the super trees, and you get a little look into luxury as you walk through Marina Bay Sands.

Getting There From Merlion Park
If you aren’t keen to watch the show from Merlion Park, simply follow the bay around to Spectra.
At the Merlion Park, you are basically completely opposite, though I recommend heading down around the Fullerton Bay Hotel and walking along the waterfront that way.
It doesn’t show you can get there completely along the water, and instead takes you through the mall on Google Maps. Though this is a route I’ve done numerous times, and it’s super straightforward with plenty of people around.
The walk usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes, depending on how often you stop for photos, which let’s be honest, will probably happen. I love walking along the waterfront with all the skyscrapers all lit up.
Spectra Light Show Vs Garden Rhapsody
The Spectra Light Show and Garden Rhapsody are two completely different nighttime shows in Singapore that happen every single night. Honestly, it’s pretty easy to confuse them if you’re planning your trip for the first time, though both are must-sees.
Spectra: This is the one we’ve been talking about, the light and water show outside Marina Bay Sands. You’ll watch it from the Event Plaza or around Marina Bay.
Garden Rhapsody: This is the light and music show at the Supertree Grove in Gardens by the Bay. Instead of fountains and water effects, this one is all about the giant Supertrees lighting up in time with the music.
Both are free, and both are worth seeing if you have time. I do enjoy both and take visitors to each one while they are in the city. Garden Rhapsody feels a bit more magical and unique to Singapore, though I do love the intensity of the music, bass, and crazy graphics of Spectra.
It’s a super tough choice, but if you ONLY have time for one, I’d say Gardens Rhapsody. This is simply because it’s an iconic spot, and basically can you say you’ve been to Singapore if you didn’t do this?

Can You Watch Spectra And Garden Rhapsody On The Same Night?
Yes, you can watch Spectra and Garden Rhapsody on the same night and it’s a pretty good way to hit up both of these highlights as once. The timing actually works out pretty well if you plan it right.
Garden Rhapsody at Gardens by the Bay runs daily at 7:45 pm and 8:45 pm, while Spectra at Marina Bay Sands runs at 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm Sunday to Thursday, with an extra 10:00 pm show on Friday and Saturday.
So, the easiest option is to watch Garden Rhapsody at 7:45 pm, then wander over to Marina Bay Sands for the 9:00 pm Spectra show.
Afterwards, head through Marina Bay Sands, maybe grab a quick drink or something to eat, then find a spot for Spectra. If you’re visiting on a Friday or Saturday, you’ll also have the 10:00 pm Spectra show as a backup.
The walk between Supertree Grove and the Event Plaza takes around 15 minutes at least. Though with my experience, it can take a bit longer, especially with all the crowds entering and exiting at once. Honestly, I’d plan for around a 30-minute walk just to be super safe, which will still give you enough time.

My Tips For Watching The Spectra Light Show
Here are my top tips for watching the Spectra Light Show so you don’t end up awkwardly stuck behind someone’s iPad the whole time:
- It can get very busy, so make sure to get there around 15 minutes early if you want a good view
- The music is pretty loud, be prepared for some ringing ears afterwards
- In my experience, it’s not worth it on a windy day, as it sprays the water fountains everywhere and prevents the projectors from displaying images onto the water. I’ve walked away completely soaked before!
- Once the show finishes, everyone tends to move at the same time, especially towards Bayfront MRT. Hang back for a few minutes if you don’t want to be part of the slow shuffle.
- Being front row sounds ideal, but you can sometimes be too close to properly see the full show. A few rows back usually gives you a better view of the fountains, lasers, and projections together.

Things To Do Before Or After Spectra
Since the Spectra Light Show only lasts around 15 minutes, I definitely wouldn’t plan your whole evening around it.
You could visit Gardens by the Bay first and watch Garden Rhapsody at the Supertree Grove, then walk over to Marina Bay Sands for Spectra.
Another option is to spend some time wandering through The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, especially if you need air conditioning, food, or just want to window shop luxury stores.
I often hit up Lau Pa Sat hawker center for a good bite before walking over to the show. This is a pretty iconic spot to eat and where you’ll find the famous Satay Street.
If you’re still keen to keep walking, head across the Helix Bridge towards the Singapore Flyer, or make your way around the bay to Merlion Park for those classic Marina Bay views. This area is honestly one of the nicest places in Singapore for a nighttime stroll, especially once everything is lit up.

FAQs About The Spectra Light Show Singapore
Is the Spectra Light Show suitable for kids?
Yes, the Spectra Light Show is a good option for kids since it’s free, short, and easy to watch from the waterfront. Just keep in mind it can get crowded and loud, plus kids may find it hard to see, so you may want to stand a little further off to the side.

The show is outdoors, so bad weather can affect it. Light rain usually isn’t an issue, but if there’s heavy rain, lightning, or strong wind, I would skip it.

Okay, so hopefully now, after however many words I’ve written, I’ve well and truly convinced you to go check out the Spectra Light Show in Singapore.
