4. A Lot Safer Than You May Expect

When traveling to a foreign country, safety is always a top concern. However, Belize has made great strides in recent years to improve its overall security and safety for tourists. In fact, the country’s crime rate has significantly decreased in the past decade.

Most of the crime and safety concerns is in relation to Belize City, the largest city in the country and a common starting point for tourists. However, the majority of tourists don’t stay here and instead hop on a ferry to the island or a shuttle heading inland.

The key to staying safe while traveling in Belize is to use common sense and exercise caution as you would when visiting any new country. By following a few simple guidelines, you can minimize any potential risks and enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Some tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in Belize include:

  • Avoid traveling alone at night
  • Stay aware of your surroundings
  • Use reputable tour companies for excursions
  • Respect local laws and customs
  • Don’t flaunt expensive belongings or large amounts of cash

Animal lovers rejoice. Aside from its stunning beaches and crystal clear waters, Belize is also home to a diverse range of wildlife.

With over 600 species of birds, 145 species of mammals, and countless reptiles, insects, and marine creatures, the country is a nature lover’s paradise.

One of the best places to experience the rich biodiversity of Belize is at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s first jaguar reserve. Here, you can spot these majestic cats in their natural habitat along with other exotic animals like howler monkeys, tapirs, and toucans.

Another reason why Belize is a top destination for travelers is its diverse range of destinations to explore.

Ambergris Caye: The largest island in Belize, Ambergris Caye is a hot spot for water sports and has the Western Hemisphere’s largest barrier reef. This spectacular site is perfect for scuba diving and snorkeling, with abundant marine life and pristine coral formations.

Caye Caulker: This small limestone coral island in the Caribbean Sea is beloved for its laid-back vibe, and it’s a perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying fresh seafood.

Aside from the beautiful scenery, Belize also offers a wide range of adventure activities that cater to all levels of thrill-seekers. From water sports to jungle expeditions, there’s something for everyone in this tropical paradise.

Water Sports: With its crystal clear waters and diverse marine life, it’s no surprise that Belize is a top destination for water sports. Popular activities include snorkeling, diving, and fishing. The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-largest barrier reef in the world and provides endless opportunities for underwater exploration.

Cave Tubing: One of the most unique activities in Belize is cave tubing, where you float down underground rivers on an inner tube while admiring the incredible rock formations and ancient Mayan artifacts.

Jungle Expeditions: For those looking for a more adventurous experience, Belize’s lush jungles offer endless opportunities. From hiking through dense forests to rappelling down waterfalls, there’s no shortage of adrenaline-pumping activities in the jungle.

This cave system is home to ancient Mayan artifacts and human remains, and you can only access it by swimming through underground rivers and navigating dark chambers. This no doubt was a highlight of my trip.

8. Easy To Get Around Between Towns / Islands

In Belize, it’s easy to get around between towns and islands thanks to reliable public transportation and tour companies.

Buses are a popular mode of transportation for longer distances, while water taxis are readily available for island hopping.

You can even find regular tourist shuttles that take you directly to popular destinations such as Belize City to San Ignacio, making it convenient for travelers to explore multiple areas during their stay.

For a more luxurious option, visitors can also hire private transfers or rent a car to explore at their own pace.

Belizeans are known for their warm hospitality and friendly nature. They are always willing to help and share their country’s rich culture and history with visitors.

Don’t be surprised if you strike up a conversation with a local and end up being invited to a home-cooked meal or shown around lesser-known spots in the area. Their kindness truly adds to the overall experience

10. Foodie Delights

Belizean cuisine is a fusion of flavors from its diverse population, including Mayan, Creole, Garifuna, and Mestizo influences.

Seafood is abundant and often featured in dishes such as ceviche and coconut-based soups. You can also find traditional dishes like rice and beans with stewed chicken or pork, as well as delicious street food options.

For more adventurous palates, there are even options for trying traditional dishes using unique ingredients like iguana or gibnut (a rodent-like mammal).

The country is also known for its delicious rum and local breweries, making it a perfect destination for food and drink enthusiasts.

Don’t forget to try the famous Belizean hot sauce, Marie Sharp’s, which can be found in almost every restaurant and household. It also makes for a great souvenir that you can bring home!

11. It’s Small But Mighty

Despite being the second smallest country in Central America, Belize has a lot to offer. From pristine beaches and lush rainforests to ancient Mayan ruins and diverse wildlife, there is no shortage of activities for visitors to enjoy.

12. English Speaking Country

Belize stands out as the only country in the region with English as its official language. This advantage greatly facilitates travel and communication for English-speaking visitors exploring this beautiful nation.

Now when I visited Belize for the first time I had just spent a month in Mexico putting my Spanish lessons into practice. Sure I was able to get around, ask basic questions, and do general travel stuff, but I couldn’t have in-depth conversations with the locals.

As a more introverted traveler, I didn’t think I would miss this before I arrived in Belize but boy was I wrong. It was so much easier to connect with the locals and learn more about their culture and way of life because we could effectively communicate without any language barriers.

13. World Class Diving

As I said earlier Belize is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world, making it a popular destination for scuba divers and snorkelers.

With crystal clear waters, diverse marine life, and unique diving sites like the famous Blue Hole, Belize offers some of the best diving experiences in the world.

After learning to dive in Roatan I knew I had to come back to Belize to explore deeper than I did on snorkeling tours from San Pedro or Caye Caulker.

Booking myself in for a second trip to San Pedro with my partner we spent a week exploring the underwater world by diving from Ambergris Caye. We saw countless turtles, nurse sharks, various sting rays, and my favorite the Caribbean Reef Sharks.

There was even a dive where we had Caribbean Reef Sharks surrounding us from the moment we descended through the whole hour until we ascended again!

14. Sustainable Tourism

The government of Belize has made efforts to protect its natural resources and promote sustainable tourism.

This includes strict regulations on fishing, hunting, and land development near the coast to preserve the delicate marine ecosystem and protect endangered species.

Visitors are also encouraged to practice responsible tourism by supporting local businesses, using eco-friendly products, and participating in conservation efforts such as beach cleanups or volunteering at wildlife sanctuaries.

Some of my favorite conservation projects I checked out during my backpacking Belize adventures included the Iguana Eco Sanctuary in San Pedro and the Green Iguana Conservation Project in San Ignacio.

16. Impressive Caves

Aside from the beautiful beaches and marine life, Belize also has a stunning network of underground caves.

These caves have been used for centuries by the Mayan people for spiritual ceremonies and rituals, and now serve as popular tourist attractions for activities such as cave tubing, hiking, and cave diving.

One of the most impressive caves I explored was Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), also known as the Cave of the Stone Sepulcher.

This cave is home to ancient Mayan artifacts and human remains, making it a truly unique and awe-inspiring experience.

17. Get The Real Deserted Island Experience

Belize has over 200 small islands, or cayes, scattered along its coast.

Some of these Cayes are inhabited and offer luxury resorts and tourist activities, while others remain untouched and provide the perfect setting for a secluded getaway.

I highly recommend taking a trip to one of these uninhabited cayes for a true deserted island experience.

You can spend your days lounging on white sand beaches, snorkeling in crystal clear waters, and camping under the stars.

If you can afford to take a sailing tour with Raggamuffin Tours, you won’t regret it.

Their trips include stops at uninhabited cayes and offer an authentic island experience while also supporting responsible tourism practices. I, unfortunately, wasn’t able to do this while I was backpacking as they were taking a break over the easter holidays, but next time I am in Belize and have a few days free that is definitely on my list!

18. Not overly touristy

One of the things I loved most about Belize was that it didn’t feel overly touristy.

While there are certainly popular tourist destinations and activities, such as Ambergris Caye, I found that they weren’t overrun with tourists.

The local people were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel like I was experiencing an authentic culture and not just a tourist attraction.

I also appreciated that there weren’t tacky souvenir shops at every corner, and the locals seemed genuinely interested in getting to know visitors rather than just selling them something. It’s refreshing to visit a place where tourism hasn’t taken over completely.

19. Perfect For Relaxation And Adventure

Belize offers the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Whether you’re looking to lounge on a quiet beach or go zip-lining through the rainforest, there’s something for everyone.

The laid-back Caribbean lifestyle allows for plenty of downtime, while the country’s diverse landscape provides endless opportunities for exploration.

You can spend your days snorkeling in the Belize Barrier Reef, or hiking through lush jungles and spotting exotic wildlife.

And at the end of a busy day, you can relax with a Belikin beer in hand and watch the stunning sunset over the turquoise waters.

20. Can Be Affordable

Belize may seem like a destination only for the wealthy, but it can actually be quite affordable.

There are plenty of budget-friendly accommodations and activities available throughout the country.

You can find inexpensive guesthouses and hostels, or even camp on some of the islands.

Local street food and markets also offer delicious and cheap dining options. And if you plan your trip during the off-season, you can save even more money.

So don’t let your budget hold you back from experiencing all that Belize has to offer. I met plenty other backpackers and budget travelers during my time there, from all corners of the globe.
