Planning a Nho Que River boat ride while doing the Ha Giang Loop? From the seriously steep road into the valley to cruising beneath enormous canyon cliffs, getting there was almost as memorable as the boat ride itself.
The Nho Que River boat ride is one of the most popular stops on the Ha Giang Loop, taking you through the crazy impressive Tu San Canyon beneath some seriously enormous cliffs.
However, one thing photos don’t show is everything involved in actually reaching the river.
I did the boat ride as part of my four-day Ha Giang Loop tour with Road Kings. By the time we arrived, we had already spent hours on the motorbikes, and several people in our group, including myself, were feeling pretty exhausted.
Getting down into the valley was an experience in itself. The road was incredibly steep and became the only section of the entire loop that made me genuinely nervous.
After waiting for our transport and taking a short shuttle to the boat station, we spent around an hour cruising through the canyon.
Below, I’ll cover exactly what the Nho Que River boat ride was like, how to get there, current ticket prices, facilities, and whether I think it deserves a place on your Ha Giang Loop trip.

What Is The Nho Que River Boat Ride?
If you’ve seen photos of the Ha Giang Loop, chances are you’ve already seen the Nho Que River winding between the mountains below Ma Pi Leng Pass. The river passes through Tu San Canyon between the popular overnight towns of Dong Van and Meo Vac.
From the viewpoints above, the river looks surprisingly small compared with the mountains. However, once you’re actually down on the water, you realize just how enormous those cliffs are.
The best way to experience this is with a boat ride, which is included on plenty of 3 and 4 day Loop itineraries.
That change in perspective was what made the Nho Que River boat ride worthwhile for me. It reminded me a lot of Sumidero Canyon in Mexico, where you’re cruising along feeling absolutely tiny beside these massive rock walls.

How To Get To The Nho Que River Boat Station
There are two main access points for Nho Que River boat trips: Ta Lang and Xin Cai.
Which one you use will depend on where you’re traveling from and how your Ha Giang Loop tour has organized the day. If you’re traveling with a company, you won’t need to worry about this because everything is sorted for you.
Our Easy Riders took us down a seriously steep road into the valley before reaching the main parking area. Even after spending two days traveling along winding mountain roads, this was the only section of the entire Ha Giang Loop that made me properly nervous.
To make the journey even more memorable, the bag with all my swimwear fell off the motorbike. Luckily, the Easy Rider behind us noticed it immediately and alerted my driver before we traveled too far.
Definitely make sure everything attached to your motorbike is properly secured before heading down!
Once we reached the main parking area, there were toilets and somewhere to buy drinks while we waited.
The shuttle bus took a little while to arrive, which wasn’t ideal when several of us were already hot and exhausted after a long day on the motorbikes. This took us to and from Nho Que River boat station since you can’t take your motorbikes all the way.

What’s The Nho Que River Boat Ride Really Like?
The Nho Que River boats are pretty simple, so don’t expect anything fancy. Ours had seats running along both sides and a small platform at the front where you could stand and pose for photos. There was karaoke in the front, but we kept the nature vibes rather than loud music blasting.
Our boat carried the eight people from our Road Kings group and one solo traveler from South Korea. It didn’t feel crowded at all, and there was plenty of room for everyone to move around and take turns getting photos at the front.
We spent around an hour cruising along the river and through the canyon. From the viewpoints above, it’s difficult to understand how large the mountains are. Once you’re on the water with the cliffs towering above, you can properly realize the scale.
Like most of our activities on the Ha Giang Loop, the people around us made the experience even better, and we spent plenty of time getting some group pics. It was the late afternoon, so dusk was beginning to fall, and the lighting was perfect.
The boat ride lasted around one hour, which honestly was the perfect length. It gave us enough time to enjoy the canyon and take plenty of photos without dragging.

Nho Que River Boat Ride Tickets And Costs
The Nho Que River boat ride costs 150,000 VND for anyone over 1.2 metres tall and 80,000 VND for anyone 1.2 metres or shorter.
This includes the boat ride, return shuttle between the main parking area and boat station, basic insurance, and tax.
Independent travelers can buy tickets from the ticket counter at the main parking area. You’ll then wait for the shuttle to take you the rest of the way down to the boat station.
Many multi-day Ha Giang Loop tours include the boat ride, although you should always check the exact itinerary, don’t just expect it to be included.
When I visited with Road Kings, the boat ride was included in my US$299 four-day Highlands package. I didn’t need to purchase a ticket or pay anything extra at the river.

Practical Tips For The Boat Ride
The Nho Que River boat ride is honestly pretty straightforward, though a little preparation can make the experience much more comfortable.
Here are the practical things I’d recommend knowing before you go.
What To Wear And Bring
You don’t need to wear anything special for the Nho Que River boat ride. Comfortable, lightweight clothing is best, especially during the warmer months when it can become ridiculously hot down.
I’d bring sunscreen, sunglasses, water, a hat, and even a couple of snacks. You’ll be chilling for the next hour so whatever will make you feel good to keep going on the motorbikes afterwards.
Definitely keep your phone or camera somewhere easy to reach. The front platform is made for photos, and you’ll probably want to take plenty once you’re surrounded by the canyon walls.
Life jackets are provided, and yes, you do need to wear these for most of the ride. Though the boat drivers are good and let you take them off for photos.

Toilets, Drinks And Other Facilities
The main parking area had toilets and somewhere to buy drinks while we waited for the shuttle.
I’d recommend using the bathroom here before heading down, as I didn’t see anything at all down by the boat station.
They were decent Western toilets, but definitely bring your own toilet paper, as I wouldn’t trust it to be topped up at all times.
I’d also carry your own water and a small snack to keep your energy up, especially if the parking area or shuttle is busy. We had to wait a little while for our transport, and being hot, tired, and hungry definitely isn’t fun.
Safety And Accessibility
The boat ride itself is fairly relaxed, but you’ll have to wear the life jacket provided.
You can’t swim in the Nho Que River, and I’d be careful when moving toward the front platform for photos, especially while the boat is moving.
Honestly, the journey down into the valley felt like the riskiest part. The roads are steep and winding, so I wouldn’t recommend driving yourself unless you’re confident.
The Nho Que River boat ride also isn’t completely accessible. Depending on the boat station, reaching the water may involve a shuttle, walking, uneven surfaces, and stepping down into a relatively small boat. There were about 30 steps down to reach our boat.

Weather And The Best Time To Visit
The best time for a boat ride on the Nho Que River is during the drier months from October to April. During this time, the river is more likely to have the clear blue-green color you see in photos.
However, that famous color is never guaranteed. Rain, cloud cover, sediment, and changing water levels can all affect how the river looks on the day you visit.
From June to September, heavier rain can make the river higher and muddier, while the steep road down becomes a lot more slippery.
I visited in April, and it was ridiculously hot down in the valley. Make sure you have water, sunscreen and sit under the canopy of the boat, especially if you’re arriving after already spending several hours on a motorbike under the sun.
If you’re visiting solo, morning is generally the most comfortable time for cooler temperatures and softer light.
However, organized Ha Giang Loop tours will usually determine when you arrive. We visited later in the day and still had an amazing view through the canyon.

Is The Nho Que River Boat Ride Worth It?
Yes, I think the Nho Que River boat ride is worth doing, especially when you’re already traveling around the Ha Giang Loop.
The boat itself is nothing fancy, and there isn’t a huge amount going on during the hour-long ride. You’re essentially cruising along the river, listening to music and taking photos. However, the enormous cliffs of Tu San Canyon are what make the experience special.
Our group also made the boat ride much more fun. We spent most of the journey laughing, posing for ridiculous photos, and enjoying the music together.
I’m sure it would still be beautiful alone, but the people around me definitely made it more memorable.
