Honduras vs Belize might look like an easy choice, but once you consider costs, safety, transport, and things to do, it’s not so easy.

Honduras and Belize may be damn close on the map, but you’ll notice a difference when you’re actually there with differences in prices, the general tourist crowds, activities, and ease of transport.

I’ve traveled Belize and Honduras both solo and on a trip with my partner. This wasn’t just luxe island-hopping either, but the overland border crossings, hours on local buses, and exploring the non-touristy mainland towns.

I quickly learned that each one has its positives and negatives. Honduras is generally cheaper and more adventurous, while Belize is easier to travel thanks to English being widely spoken and better tourism infrastructure.

So let’s get into the details to find out what kind of holiday you’re after to decide whether it will be Belize or Honduras?

Honduras vs Belize: Which Should You Visit?

Basically, the choice of Honduras or Belize comes right down to ease vs affordability.

Belize is by far easier to get around, meet people, and better set up for tourists, making it super popular for first-timers in Central America.

Honduras, on the other hand, is cheaper and quieter… well, outside the Bay Islands. But be prepared for planning, and you’ll need to be flexible.

If you’re keen on convenience, English-speaking locals, and simple transport, Belize is ideal. But if you’re a bit like me and want affordable, diving, and fewer crowds, Honduras is perfect.

Where Are Honduras and Belize?

Now, you’ll find Honduras in Central America between Guatemala and Nicaragua, lying on the Caribbean and the Gulf of Fonseca on the Pacific side.

Most travelers stick to the Caribbean side, especially the Bay Islands like Roatan and Utila. The mainland is better known for epic national parks, jungles, and Mayan ruins.

Belize borders Guatemala and Mexico along the Caribbean coast. It’s much smaller and easier to get around than Honduras, thanks to English being widely spoken.

Safety in Honduras vs Belize

Safety is important to consider when choosing where to go, especially in Central America. Both Honduras and Belize have reputations that can sound pretty intimidating, but the reality on the ground is usually a lot more chill than people expect.

That said, it really comes down to where you go (larger cities vs tourist areas) and how you get around in Belize and Honduras.

Safety In Honduras

It’s no secret that Honduras has higher crime rates, particularly in large cities like Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. If you’re following the standard travel route you won’t spend any time here.

The main tourist areas of the Bay Islands, with Roatan and Utila, as well as Copan, are where you’ll find the majority of travelers, and they are generally safer than big cities.

When I traveled in mainland Honduras, I did notice far fewer other tourists compared to Guatemala or Mexico. It was super strange at first, but I never felt targeted or unsafe.

At the end of the day, you really just become more aware and self-reliant. This means using taxis to get around at night, avoiding certain areas, and traveling during the day.

Safety In Belize

Belize is seen as the safer of the two countries, especially in tourist spots like Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye, and San Ignacio.

That said, crime does exist, especially in Belize City. Since it’s a transport hub, you’ll likely still pass through here when transferring between buses and boats. Just make sure to stay within the terminal around other tourists and keep your belongings safe.

In a lot of Central America, the unsafe cities are usually the largest ones in the country. The same thing goes in Belize City, where you should be a bit more aware of your surroundings and who’s around.

Cost of Travel: Honduras vs Belize

When it comes to budget, Honduras is cheaper than Belize across accommodation, food, and transport.

It’s a backpackers’ paradise with those low prices, well except for the lack of travelers to socialise with.

Cost To Travel In Honduras

Honduras is one of the more budget-friendly countries in Central America, especially once you’re off the Bay Islands of Roatan and Utila. Seriously, those are $$$ since everything needs to be shipped from the mainland.

Budget hostels cost as little as $10.00 per night, while your average hotel costs around $30.00 to $50.00.

Food is also cheap, with local meals and street food often costing less than $5.00. Baleadas from comedor-style restaurants became my best friend!

Getting around is affordable too, especially local buses. Tourist shuttles add up fast since there are fewer travelers to share the cost. I booked a shuttle from Copan Ruinas to La Ceiba, and there were just 3 other people.

Cost To Travel In Belize

Belize, on the other hand, is much more expensive, mostly thanks to its popularity and tourism infrastructure.

Budget hostels usually start around $25.00 per night, while mid-range hotels tend to sit closer to $80.00.

Food costs are higher too, with basic local meals or street food often around $10.00. If you’re on the islands, you can at least find cheap, fresh seafood!

Transport can be similar to Honduras if you use public buses. However, taxis and private shuttles can be quite expensive, and Belize is small, so you aren’t actually traveling far.

Getting Around: Transportation in Honduras & Belize

Getting around Honduras or Belize isn’t really that difficult, but you’ll find the frequency of departures and prices are the big differences.

Belize is generally easier to get around since it’s so small with multiple departures throughout the day.

While Honduras takes a bit more patience, especially on the mainland, where there are longer distances and may not be daily tourist shuttles.

Transport In Belize

Thankfully, Belize is one of the easier Central American countries to get around, especially if you’re sticking to the main backpacking trail of Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and San Ignacio.

Local buses run between most towns and are cheap. Expect island time, even on the mainland, with basically everything having a loose definition of schedules. They can be crowded, but at least most people speak English.

On the islands, golf carts rule, especially in San Pedro. And yes, they’re super fun!

Ferries are the main way to travel to the islands like Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. If money isn’t a major issue, there are also domestic flights from Belize City.

Renting a car in Belize can make sense if you’re exploring the mainland, especially around San Ignacio or heading out to waterfalls and caves. Though you’ll need to be aware that road conditions aren’t always the best, so drive with caution and avoid driving at night.

I used plenty of tourist shuttles, and they’re a common way to get around. They’ll be pricier than the bus, but they’re convenient and will drop you right off at your accommodation.

Transport In Honduras

Honduras is more of a mixed bag when it comes to transport. Buses are crazy cheap and used by locals, but schedules are pretty unpredictable. They also aren’t the safest option as you’ll likely need to transfer in San Pedro Sula bus terminal, which is known for theft.

On the mainland, tourist shuttles will be your easiest and safest option, especially for longer distances. Just prepare for eye-watering prices since there are so few travelers to split the overall cost with. Also, plan in advance because some don’t run every day.

For getting to the islands, ferries operate from La Ceiba on the mainland to Roatan and Utila, though schedules aren’t always frequent.

And domestic flights do exist, but unless you’re tight on time, it’s typically not worth it due to high costs.

Best Time To Visit Honduras Or Belize

Honduras and Belize follow the seasons at the same time, which makes sense since they’re so close together. This means the wet season in one will be the same in the other.

Overall, this won’t affect which country you visit, but it can change what your trip feels like with weather, visibility for snorkeling, and crowds.

Best Time To Visit Honduras

Now, the best time for Honduras is the dry season from December to April. This means sunny days, low humidity, perfect for calm waters and easy travel days. Though with the Bay Islands off the mainland, they can still get some rain during this time.

The hurricane season runs from June to November, when heavy rain causes flooding, rough seas, and washed-out roads. Late August to early October is the peak hurricane season.

It’s still possible to travel during the wet season, and you’ll find it cheaper, but you’ll need to be flexible. On the flip side, during the dry season, you’ll have to deal with high prices and more people, though I reckon it’s worth it.

Best Time To Visit Belize

Belize is similar to Honduras with December to April being the most popular time to visit, thanks to dry weather and calmer seas. It’s peak season for snorkeling, diving, and exploring inland spots like caves and ruins.

The low season runs from June to November and comes with more rain, but also fewer crowds and cheaper places to stay. If you’re planning a beach trip, you’ll likely have to deal with choppy seas and poor visibility.

Luckily, showers are usually short and predictable, so if you’re on a budget and don’t mind a bit of rain, it can still be a solid time to visit.

Beaches & Diving In Honduras & Belize

Now you’ll be happy to know both Honduras and Belize deliver when it comes to warm water, coral reefs, and Caribbean sandy beaches.

That said, the beach scene (and diving) is quite different in each. Belize has more accessible cayes and some famous dive sites, while Honduras is a lot cheaper and laid-back.

Beaches in Honduras

Honduras really stands out with the Bay Islands, particularly Roatan and Utila. Beaches here tend to be far quieter, less developed, and much easier to enjoy without the crowds.

Personally, I much preferred the beaches in Honduras. I found it easier to stumble across those long-ass stretches of sand. Especially on Roatan, where you didn’t have to compete for space or walk out on a pier just to find some water without all the seaweed.

My favorite beach was Half Moon Bay in the West End of Roatan. I’d spend my days hanging in the sandy shallows, popping out to one of the nearby restaurants for lunch. It’s the perfect spot for a beach day with calm waters and a nice mix of locals and tourists.

Beaches in Belize

To set your expectations, Belize is famous for its reef rather than its beaches. And while there are beautiful beaches, depending on the time of year, they can be seriously hit or miss.

You’ll find Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker pretty crowded, and during certain months, sargassum seaweed can be a major smelly issue during this season.

When I visited Belize in April and June, I often struggled to find a swimmable beach and ended up walking out along piers to reach clear water, which is damn crazy for an island.

Diving In Honduras Or Belize?

Both countries sit along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, so diving is excellent either way. Though the types of dives you typically do differ.

If you’re on a budget, Honduras is the perfect choice with Utila being one of the cheapest places in the world to get certified. Dives around the Bay Islands have pretty easy conditions for the most part, and I saw good reef health with large, colorful corals. I had an amazing time, and was glad I didn’t have to deal with any crazy currents as a newbie.

Belize, on the other hand, is known for its epic diving, including the Great Blue Hole. However, you do need an Advanced Open Water certification for this.

Diving from Ambergris Caye often means deeper sites and more chances to see pelagics like sharks. I noticed far more compared to Honduras.

Culture, Food & Nightlife in Honduras vs Belize

Even though Honduras and Belize are close together, they have quite a different feel when it comes to culture, language, food, and nightlife.

You’ll find Belize has a large Caribbean, Creole, and Garifuna influence with beach parties and lively bars. On the other hand, mainland Honduras is predominantly Spanish-speaking, whereas on the islands theres a mix of cultures and casual nightlife.

Honduras is Mayan and Spanish, with a stronger traditional feel in those mainland towns. Places like Copan Ruinas feel very local, with markets, family-run eateries, and a community atmosphere. Sure, tourism exists, but it feels like a little under the radar with barely any other travelers around.

Belize has a much more Caribbean vibe, and you’ll find a mix of Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo, and Mayan influences. One big difference is how easy it was to connect with locals. You’ll find yourself chatting and joking around since English is the official language.

Even just being able to simply ask for directions or local recommendations. That was seriously one of my favorite parts of the country.

Food In Honduras & Belize

Food in both countries is simple, filling, and carb-heavy, especially on a backpacker budget. Obviously, I was in heaven!

In Honduras, meals are cheap and hearty. Baleadas (thick tortillas stuffed with beans, cheese, and eggs) quickly became a daily staple along with yuca con chicharrón and tamales.

Belize’s food reflects its cultural mix. Expect lots of rice and beans, stewed chicken, fry jacks, and seafood cooked with coconut and spice. I still dream of fry jacks! It’s still casual food, but with a more Caribbean twist, especially on the coast and islands.

Drinking & Nightlife In Honduras Or Belize

Neither country is a party capital, but both do chill nightlife well.

In Honduras, evenings aren’t party-focused. Basically, it’ll be beach bars, local music, social chats, and cold beers rather than EDM nights out. You’ll likely have an early night here, especially in Copan Ruinas or La Ceiba on the mainland.

Belize feels more social, especially in places like San Ignacio and on the islands of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. Here, dive bars, live music, and traveler hangouts are super easy to find.

Things To Do In Honduras & Belize

When it comes to things to do, both Honduras and Belize are great. Heads up, the experiences in each are quite different from each other.

Honduras feels a lot more off the beaten track and adventure-focused, with white water rafting and diving. On the opposite side, Belize offers a mix of jungle and wildlife without getting too far out of your comfort zone.

If you’re keen on the outdoors and lesser-known spots, Honduras is a great choice.

The Bay Islands will have you covered for anything water focused such as snorkeling and diving, while the mainland is where you’ll find the jungles, rivers, and ruins without the crowds.

While in Honduras, you can’t miss:

Belize has just as many awesome things to do, and they’re a lot closer together. If you’re short on time, you can go from jungles to islands in just hours.

Top things to do in Belize include:

• Exploring Mayan sites like Caracol and Cahal Pech
• Cave tubing or visiting Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM cave tour)
• Wildlife spotting in Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
• Snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve or Shark Ray Alley
• Taking a scenic flight over the Blue Hole
• Visiting the beaches in Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye

If you’re keen on an easy, stress-free time, with plenty of tours, Belize is absolutely ideal.

Honduras Or Belize For Different Types Of Travelers

Both countries are great for families, but the vibe is different.

Honduras is better for those who enjoy nature, wildlife, and adventure, especially if you’re keen on national parks, quieter beaches, and outdoor activities.

Belize will be easier and great if your fam is keen on a relaxed, beach trip, with nice hotels, tours, and smooth transport.

Verdict: Adventure-focused families may prefer Honduras & easygoing beach trips are a must in Belize.

Which Is Better For Solo Travelers?

As a solo traveler, I did enjoy both, just for different reasons.

Honduras was a lot quieter and really felt like I was solo. I had to rely on myself and my instincts alone, which felt like an accomplishment. In a lot of countries, you may be solo, but you’ll still meet lots of people, but not here.

In places like Copan Ruinas, it’s pretty normal to wander around without other travelers in sight.

Belize is much more social and touristy. In spots like San Ignacio and Placencia, it’s easy to meet others, and because English is widely spoken, chatting with locals and making connections feels effortless.

Verdict: Honduras if you’re happy doing your own thing & Belize if meeting people matters to you.

Which Is Better For A Honeymoon?

Belize wins for honeymoons thanks to its luxe resorts, private islands, beachfront spas, and bougie experiences. Places like Ambergris Caye are essentially built for couples wanting resort comfort and romance.

Honduras can still be romantic, especially on the Bay Islands. Though it’s definitely less fancy and more about the adventure. Plus, it’s affordable so you can enjoy being on holiday for longer.

Verdict: Belize for sure.

Which Country Is Better on a Budget?

Both countries can be done cheaply, but Honduras will be a lot easier.

Accommodation, food, and transport are way cheaper, especially on the mainland, and your money simply goes further every day.

Belize is still kinda possible on a budget, but you’ll need to be strict, especially on San Pedro or Caye Caulker. This means taking buses over taxis or tourist shuttles and avoiding pricey tours.
