Ha Giang To Ha Long Bay: My VIP Sleeper Bus Experience (2026)

After a few dusty days on the bike, you might be ready to swap mountain roads for some time on the water! Here’s how to get from Ha Giang to Ha Long Bay, with my sleeper bus experience and handy tips for those painfully early arrivals.

The main options for getting from Ha Giang to Ha Long Bay are a bus or a private car with a driver. Personally, I took an overnight sleeper bus straight after finishing the four-day Ha Giang Loop with Road Kings, and booked our onward transport through them as well.

Our journey took around nine hours, leaving Ha Giang at 7 pm and arriving in Ha Long at 4 am. The cabins were pretty comfortable, and I slept for most of the trip, though that early arrival is definitely something worth planning around!

I’d booked the previous night at Ha Long Essence Hotel and confirmed we could check in at 4 am. Having somewhere to get a few more hours of sleep before our cruise was well worth it.

Below, I’ll cover the bus and private car options, including prices, journey times and how to book. Alongside my own sleeper bus experience, you’ll find the practical details to check before traveling, from cabin comfort to drop-off locations and early-morning arrivals.

Quick Answer: How To Get From Ha Giang To Ha Long Bay

The main ways to get from Ha Giang to Ha Long Bay are by bus or private car with a driver.

The bus is the budget choice, while a private transfer gives you more control over departure times and where you’re dropped off.

TransportJourney TimePrice
Bus9–11 hours500,000 VND / US$19 per person
Private carAround 7.5 hoursFrom US$185 per car

Personally, I paid 500,000 VND / US$19 per person for our sleeper bus booked through Road Kings, so it’s worth comparing your loop company’s price with the online options.

Though you do take the risk of not knowing what company they will book you on, which has worked out extremely badly for me in the past.

Ha Giang To Ha Long Bay By Bus

If you’re traveling on a backpacker budget, the bus is the option to look at first. We went with an overnight sleeper after finishing the loop, and honestly, I was just pretty happy to have somewhere to lie down!

You’ll find standard sleeper buses, VIP cabin buses, and tickets that include a change to a van.

It’s worth checking exactly what you’re booking, especially if you’re like me and hoping to settle in and sleep most of the way. I will only book VIP cabin buses going forward as they are so much more comfortable and well worth the extra step up in price.

We were even picked up from our hostel by the actual bus on this route, which made things super easy. We each had a cabin with a privacy curtain. They were pretty comfy, though a little shorter than our first sleeper bus from Hanoi Airport to Ha Giang.

At 180cm, I had to lie diagonally to stretch out, so that’s something to keep in mind if you’re tall like me!

Booking Your Bus Tickets

I booked our bus through Road Kings and paid 500,000 VND / US$19 per person for a ride with Quang Tuyen Limousine Bus. Since we were already doing the loop with them, it was handy to get our onward transport sorted through the same company.

If you’ve booked a loop tour, ask whether they can arrange your bus to Ha Long as well. Get them to confirm the cabin type, pickup location, and price so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

You can also book online through 12Go Asia, this is who I usually use, plus I love that you can check out reviews. Though on this route it’s worth looking carefully and making sure you have a direct bus to Ha Long, not one where you need to transfer in Hanoi.

If you’re keen to book the same company as I traveled on just choose Quang Tuyen Limousine Bus from the operator list in filters.

Personally, I’d get this sorted before heading out on the loop. Then you can enjoy those last few days knowing your next journey is already booked!

Departure Times And Pickups

You’ve got a few departure times to choose from, depending on who you book with. There’s departures at 7 am, 9:10 am and 11:15 am, plus evening sleeper buses at 7 pm, 8 pm and 11 pm.

Our pickup was at 7 pm, and the bus came straight to our hostel, which was handy! Though if you book online, you’ll need to organise pick up or meet at the specified address.

We were the first ones on, though, so we then drove around collecting roughly 12 other people before actually leaving Ha Giang.

So, something to keep in mind: your pickup time isn’t always when you’ll be heading out of town.

If you’re leaving straight after the loop, ask your tour company when you’re likely to get back before choosing a bus.

I’d give myself enough time to collect my bags, have a shower, and grab dinner before settling in for another long ride!

This is another good company but they don’t do Ha Giang to Ha Long unfortunately

Sleeper Cabins And Facilities

With a lot of cabin or VIP buses, you’ll have two options when booking: A single cabin or a double cabin.

Now, these are the exact same size; it’s just whether you’re comfortable sharing with someone else, as it’s pretty tight for two people. A double is slightly cheaper than two individual single tickets, but for me I was happy to spend a little more for the extra space.

My partner and I each had our own cabin with a privacy curtain. Inside, there was a USB charging port, a reading light, a pillow, and a blanket, so we had the basics to get settled in for the night.

The beds were pretty comfy, though the cabins were a little shorter than on our first sleeper bus in Vietnam. I could stretch out lying straight on that one, but on this bus I had to lie diagonally to get comfortable. Something to keep in mind if you’re tall like me!

I still managed to sleep for most of the journey, so overall, it worked out pretty well. Though I’d ask about the bed dimensions before booking if having enough room to stretch out is a massive priority for you.

There was no toilet on board our bus either, so I’d definitely use the bathroom before pickup!

The Journey And Rest Stops

Our journey took around nine hours, including the pickups around Ha Giang. It’s a long trip, though I managed to sleep for most of it, which definitely helped pass the time!

I wasn’t so keen on the speed of our first driver. Seriously, we were zooming around the outskirts of Ha Giang like it was a roller coaster ride! I literally thought I was going to fall out of my cabin around each curve.

Luckily enough, we changed drivers about halfway through, and things slowed down to a much more reasonable speed after that, so I felt a lot safer.

We only had one rest stop during the journey which is pretty crazy considering it was 9 hours, luckily, we were sleeping rather than drinking so didn’t need to go. The 30 minute stop had clean toilets, and there was somewhere to buy snacks as well.

I’d definitely make use of the toilets when you stop, even if you’re mostly just keen to get back to bed!

Slippers by the door for those middle-of-the-night rest stops!

Our one rest stop had snacks, drinks and clean toilets, so a pretty decent place for a break

Day Bus Vs Overnight Sleeper: Which Should You Choose?

An overnight sleeper is handy if you want to keep moving after finishing the loop. We left that same evening, slept for most of the journey, and were in Ha Long ready for our cruise the following morning. I had a strict 3 weeks in Vietnam, so I had to stick to a strict itinerary.

Though one thing I’d keep in mind is that an overnight bus doesn’t automatically save you a hotel night. I still booked the previous night at our hotel in Ha Long so we could get into the room when we arrived. Luckily it was super affordable.

A daytime journey is worth it if you struggle to sleep on buses or would prefer a proper night in bed after the loop. If your tour finishes in the afternoon, that will usually mean staying another night in Ha Giang before leaving the next morning.

Though that’s not such a bad thing, as you’ll be able to check out more of the city and the best places to eat in Ha Giang.

I’d look at the whole plan, including hotel nights and your cruise departure, when comparing the two. If you know you won’t sleep a wink on the bus, an extra night in Ha Giang could be money well spent!

If you’re staying another night after the loop, check out my guide to the best hostels in Ha Giang, with dorms and affordable private rooms for a proper night’s sleep before moving on!

Ha Giang To Ha Long Bay By Private Car

If you don’t fancy another night on a sleeper bus, you can also book a private car with a driver. It’s a fair bit pricier, though it’s worth looking at if you’re traveling with a group or want more say over when you leave and where you arrive.

Honestly it’ll still be a long travel day around 7.5–9 hours, plus then you have extra time for traffic and stops as well.

VehiclePassenger CapacityPrice Per Vehicle
SedanUp to 3 peopleUS$185
SUVUp to 4 peopleUS$215
Private vanUp to 10 peopleUS$315

Okay, I seriously am someone who would love to take a private car over a bus. Well, surprisingly, I basically never would on the route from Ha Giang to Ha Long Bay.

It’s such a long drive you don’t want to be stuffed into a vehicle. The buses allow you to spread out and enjoy your time, whether you spend it catching up on sleep or social media.

It’s also a hell of a lot cheaper and with numerous departures throughout the day it’s basically a no-brainer.

Arriving In Ha Long: Drop-Offs And Early Check-In

Now, this is the bit I’d definitely sort before getting on the bus! We arrived in Ha Long at 4am and were dropped off on the side of a random road. It was the final stop, and everyone got off there, so this wasn’t a bus station with somewhere to sit and wait.

Surprisingly, getting a Grab at that hour was easy enough. We stayed at Ha Long Essence Hotel, which was about an eight-minute drive from our drop-off point.

I’d already booked the room for the previous night and confirmed we could check in at 4 am. Honestly, having somewhere to go straight away was definitely appreciated!

For example, if your bus arrives at 4 am on Tuesday, book Monday night and tell the hotel exactly when you’ll arrive. Get confirmation that someone can let you in and that they’ll hold the room for you until then.

I’d also check your bus’s exact drop-off location before booking accommodation. That eight-minute drive was specific to our stop and hotel, so check how far you’ll need to travel when you arrive.

Our cruise had a 10.30 am meeting time at the port, which gave us a few more hours in bed and to grab breakfast before heading over.

Plenty of room for bags underneath, though keep your overnight essentials with you!

Where To Stay In Ha Long Before Your Cruise

I stayed at Ha Long Essence Hotel in Bai Chay before our cruise. It was a super short Grab ride from where the bus dropped us off, so we didn’t have far to go once we arrived.

The hotel has double, twin and family rooms, as well as suites. It’s actually super luxe and modern with AC, private bathrooms and free WiFi. Though my favorite thing is the price! We paid US$20, so US$10 each for a really nice private double room.

For us, the important part was having our crazy early morning check-in confirmed beforehand. We’d booked the previous night, which meant we could head straight to our room and get a few more hours of sleep before leaving for the port.

This is a common thing at this hotel, with plenty of people who left reviews doing the same thing.

The only downside, unfortunately, was the area. It was very nice and seemed safe enough, but we missed the breakfast (needed a sleep-in), and there wasn’t really anywhere nearby to grab anything.

It was also bucketing down to the point that the streets were flooding during our stay, so we couldn’t walk far. But that was in April, and I imagine it’d be very unlikely you have the same weather.

FAQs About Traveling From Ha Giang To Ha Long Bay

Can You Leave Straight After Finishing The Ha Giang Loop?

Yes, that’s what we did! We caught a 7 pm sleeper bus to Ha Long Bay the same evening we finished our loop with Road Kings. Check your tour’s expected return time against your bus pickup, and give yourself enough time to collect your bags and grab dinner before leaving.

Do You Need To Travel Via Hanoi?

No, you don’t need to stop over in Hanoi or book two separate journeys. You can book direct buses from Ha Giang to Ha Long, though some tickets include a change to another bus or van along the way. Check the full itinerary before booking so you know whether you’ll need to change vehicles.

Is There A Train From Ha Giang To Ha Long Bay?

No, Ha Giang is not connected to Vietnam’s railway network, so you can’t take a train directly to Ha Long Bay.

Can You Join A Ha Long Bay Cruise The Morning You Arrive?

Yes, if your bus arrives early enough to leave plenty of time before check-in. We arrived at 4 am and joined a cruise with a 10.30 am meeting time, even fitting in a few more hours of sleep at our prebooked hotel!

Wrap Up: Traveling From Ha Giang To Ha Long Bay

Honestly, I’d still choose the sleeper bus for getting from Ha Giang to Ha Long Bay. It’s much cheaper than a private car, and after four long days on the bike, I was more than happy to lie down and sleep, even if I did need to stretch out a bit awkwardly!

Leaving the evening we finished the loop also worked well for our itinerary. It meant we could spend the next day on our cruise, which was a pretty good change after all that time on the bike.

The 4 am arrival was a little less exciting, though. I was very glad we had a hotel expecting us and could get a few more hours in bed before heading to the port.

Definitely money well spent! If you’re arriving at a similar hour, get that check-in confirmed beforehand so you know you’ve got somewhere to go.
